The skin surrounds a semi-translucent flesh that encloses small seeds.
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial plant, cultivated or growing semi-wild in Portugal, that can reach up to 80 cm in height and 50 cm in diameter. It was introduced to Europe long ago from Western Asia and is commonly found near homes, along paths, hedges, slopes, and even beside vineyards. Also known as melissa or common balm, its leaves release a strong and pleasant sweet lemon aroma when handled. Although resistant to cold, its aerial parts may completely disappear during the winter.
